What is hypochlorous acid, really?

Hypochlorous acid, written HOCl, is one of the smallest useful molecules in skincare. Your immune system produces it as part of its natural response process, which is exactly why it feels so unremarkable on skin: there is nothing foreign about it.

In a cosmetic context, HOCl is produced by passing an electrical current through a simple salt and water solution. The result is a clear, near-neutral liquid with no scent and no residue. It behaves less like an active and more like a reset.

The practical appeal is restraint. There is no acid tingle, no retinoid adjustment period, no fragrance to react to. For skin that is already working hard — training, shaving, travelling, sleeping badly — that restraint is the point.
